Secure Storage & AccessWindows Small Business Server 2003 R2 is built on Windows Server 2003 technology. It includes the robust security enhancements and features found in Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition. SBS 2003 R2 uses advanced technologies such as folder redirection, where files are stored on the server in a location where only that user and administrators have access to. This means that the files are stored on the server and are backed up regularly using the powerful built in backup application. The drive(s) and folders containing sensitive data can be encrypted thus ensuring that even if a malicious user were to gain un-restricted physical access to the ever, without passwords the data is still protected from unauthorized access. Shared storage can be setup so that some users have unrestricted access while others may not be permitted to modify a file or even browse the directory. This ensures that the temp assistant does not have access to sensitive corporate data. Remote access to the office is also secure, you can either use the encrypted 'remote web workspace' to perform limited tasks on the server while accessing office resources. Secure VPN access to the network can also be enabled ensuring that your laptop can always be connected to the office around the world. Also included in SBS 2003 R2 is Windows Software Update Services (WSUS) that is a complete patch management tool for the Microsoft operating systems and applications. Critical security updates are applied automatically without the need for user intervention while other updates such as service packs wait for administrator approval. In addition to installing these updates WSUS sends out regular reports to the IT administrators to allow them to identify machines that are missing patches or may require maintenance. |
