Way back in 1975 Dr. James Baker laid out the description of a speech understanding system called DRAGON. The first introduction for DOS based computers that had significant limitations, forcing a pause between each word to allow the system to transcribe. In 1997 the first continuous dictation solution was released for Windows 95. With over 15 speech engines and dozens of product iterations thins have changed over the years. The Dragon product continuously evolved with the technology capabilities of your computer systems.
The overhead of maintaining DMPE profiles, updates and reinstalling the software often lead to activation issues or corrupted profiles that needed to be retrained. Nuance recognized these challenges, realizing that updates were not installed regularly and the physician’s experience was less optimal, clearly, a new approach was needed.
That new product, Dragon Medical One was first introduced in the USA market in for hospitals back in 2016 and came to Canada in 2018. This product co-existed with DMPE for a time; your needs have change with a shift to a cloud based infrastructure and so should your dictation solution.
As a result, Nuance Communications, Inc. are Dragon Medical Practice Edition – DMPE is discontinued in North America
Key Dates:
- DMPE will no longer be available for purchase after March 31, 2021.
- Maintenance and support contracts for DMPE ion will not be available for purchase or renewal after March 31, 2021.
- Support for DMPE will end on March 31, 2022.
What are my risks now that DMPE is discontinued?
The end of maintenance and support means that Nuance will not work to prevent or resolve any security issues that may arise for DMPE. If you choose to continue to use DMPE without support, you will do so at their own risk; Nuance will not be responsible for any security incidents, breaches or other security failures.
What if I need more licenses now that DMPE is discontinued?
The retirement of this product presents an opportunity to heighten your performance. Dragon Medical One users can access their single voice profile through the cloud for anytime, anywhere dictation. Automatic updates ensure that you always have the latest and greatest speech recognition engine and the most comprehensive product available, with no physician downtime.
